About - Hunter Marine
Hunter Marine was founded in 1973 and is
the dominant sailboat builder in North America. Our market
share in 2003 was measured at 24 %,
three percent higher than any other single brand. No matter
what anyone says, Hunter is America’s most popular
cruising sailboat. In part, this
success has been achieved by producing a consistently
high-quality boat at an economical price. How do we do
this? Although we use a wide
variety of smaller programs to enhance the appeal of the
product and our customer satisfaction, four important
principles have formed the
backbone of the company;
-
Efficient production line techniques,
-
The buying power of four companies,
-
A team approach to the production process
Innovation.
This formula has resulted in a strong base of loyal customers
who understand how these principles translate into an ownership
experience
that allows them to get the most out of their valuable time
on the water, the Hunter lifestyle.

Efficient Production Line Techniques - By organizing the
production process to operate in the most efficient manner,
Hunter trims costs and
increases consistency and
quality. This idea was developed in the 1930’s by
Henry Luhrs, who admired Henry Ford’s mass production
success in automobiles.
It was adopted and refined by his sons; Warren, who heads
Hunter Marine and John, who runs the powerboat side of the
business.
Some examples of their cost-saving processes include:
The ability to pump resin directly to each laminating work
station, saving set up and delivery time and ensuring consistent
resin quality.
Pre-cutting the glass fiber matting to specific design specifications
and delivering it as needed to each station. This reduces
overlap and the
need for trimming at the station. Computer cutting all bulkheads,
cabinetry and trim on the premises. This allows the computer
to maximize
the yield from a sheet of wood and guarantees a precision
fit during assembly.
Modular construction. Pre-assembling individual components
into “modules” which are then more easily installed
into the boat. (More on this in later
sections.) Although other builders emulate this concept,
Hunter owns it! Our heritage puts us at the leading edge,
always a step ahead in refining
and improving the production process. The most modern tools,
materials, and techniques are constantly being implemented
to maximize quality
and efficiency. The benefits to your client are cost savings
and quality in a well-built boat that will provide many
years of sailing pleasure and solid
resale value when it is time to upgrade.
Buying Power - Hunter is one of four boat manufacturing
companies owned by the Luhrs family and it’s employees.
The other three companies,
Luhrs, Mainship and Silverton, build powerboats. All four
companies work together to order massive quantities of raw
materials and equipment that
can be used on all boats, resulting in a major cost savings
that are passed directly to you.
That means you are paying less for quality, name-brand products
by Neste’ (Gelcoats), Harken, Yanmar, Raymarine, Lewmar
and numerous others.
The tremendous savings realized by purchasing in large quantities
is passed directly to the customer.High quality at a reasonable
price = value Team Work
- Each of Hunter’s boats is built by a select team
of employee-ownersspecially trained for the tasks they perform.
The Hunter ESOP
(employee stock ownership program) formed in 1996, ensures
that each of our employees has a personal interest in production
efficency and high quality.
These people take responsibility for the quality of every
boat they touch, and rigorously monitor its progress at
each stage of production. They meet regularly
to discuss the production process, recommend in-line changes
to increase overall efficiency and ensure the timely completion
of each boat. The benefit to
you is cost savings, consistent quality and dependability
- a boat that will provide years of trouble-free sailing.
Innovation - Driven by chairman Warren Luhrs, Hunter has
become an industry leader in bringing design and performance
innovations to sailors around
the world. Many of these innovations have come about as
a direct result of his personal, offshore cruising and racing
experience. Some examples are;
- The backstay-less B & R rig
- Single line reefing systems
- Fractional sailplans
- Mast support struts
- Cockpit arches
- Grid-beam hull structures
- Modular construction
- Interior storage, ventilation and lighting
- These innovations set Hunter apart from the competition
by
providing performance, safety, comfort, value and style.
